Same old but new inspiration

Lightsaber need I?

Gosh Hi again. Been a while. Hate to think that I will fall into the old not updateing things for months at a time. Same old.

But Some things are looking up (from the sewer everything up looks great). As you can see from my last entry, I finally got pictures into the blog. There was a very frustrating hold up that my FTP app refused to let me log in. A battle of epic proportions insued, or it would have seemed that way for the amount of foul language that flew out of me. But it turned out of course it was 2 transposed letters that I stared at for several weeks and then (with appropriate smacking of head sound FX) TADA! pictures. It is my first step in many to doing a tutorial site on Modeling, Level Building and Machinima.

The other inspiration was STAR WARS: Revenge of the Sith. Once again George Lucas proved that he can make a visually fantastic movie. I think he really deserves the AFI lifetime achievement award for his contributions to movie making, technology, and successful career.

Ok now that I said the nice stuff I will say, that George Lucas should never be allowed to DIRECT another movie in his life. He is a producer beyond compare. He can pull together resources and market the last drop of blood out of anything……. but as a director its like he is still back in college.

I wish sometimes I never picked up TV/Film/Theater as a hobby. It takes me at least 3 times to watch something without doing continuity check, light checks, audio checks, or wondering what cameras they used, what system the editing was done on. Yes complete tech geek.

But the calliber of actors involved in this movie should never have appeared as cardboard as they did. You cannot tell me that Samuel L Jackson could not do a better job? All a Director would have to say is “Lets see a calm exterior but a fire behind the eyes” and Jackson would have been all over that. Natalie Portman was only given 2 sentence scenes where she says “Your different” and thats it. Thats really getting the most out of your actors.

The Emperor and Obi-wan and Yoda did very good jobs. But when one of your top three actors is all CG, it makes you wonder. And we dont need to bring up the whole Jar Jar thing.

But the scenes LOOKED GREAT! Really after “Empire Strikes Back” they should killed everyone and said ‘end of story’.

All of this has had a positive effect on me. Sort of like like sticking your tongue on the alternater of your car. It has shaken the cob webs out my brain and made me WANT to be a director. Just so I can show myself I could Direct better than Lucas. It will probably not happen, but the thought that I actually said I would was much more than has ever happened before. Even more so, after I watch the film a few more times, I will be able to have a suspension of disbelief and I will become a soma drone again.

Am I standing alone here in a field or does anyone else get this disturbance in the force?

Peace and ewok grease.

Still seeing Breen

I ran across a Machinima project by Paul Marino of the ILL Clan fame (for those machinima folks) called “Still Seeing Breen” that may give everyone an idea of what I hoped Half Life 2 could really do. Now this is a music video, so it comes with all the wiggley TV stuff that MTV wishes they did anymore. But it also show up close the charcaterization that the models can do in the game.

“So Cold” by “Breaking Benjamin” is the song that video is set to. This song is, to me, one of the “standard playlist fair” for any station. I like the song but it was overplayed. That just makes me glaze over and use it to drown out engine noise. Paul Marino took this song and put a story line to it. A music video story line but still a story that I could fit the words to the story. It sparked a new interest in the song for me. The fact that the “G-man” Lip-syncs the words through the song is icing on the cake.

I hope that this video stirs some interest in, not only in myself, machinima as a whole. Maybe I’ll get back to those projects I’ve got sitting on the electronic shelf……..after I get that gnome to lvl 40.
